A Job Out of a Letterhead

I am in my early 20’s. I am young compared to my contemporaries at work. But I would like to be modest this time and share how I made a good impression in my application cover letter. The secret? Simple. A personal letterhead.

Of course it’s not usual that applicants have a personal letterhead. But that’s precisely the point. It’s unusual. And it stands out.

I first got the idea from a friend who works in the Human Resources Department of a prominent multi-national company. She says it’s tiring to go over the cover letters of applicants almost every day, with each letter almost containing the same phrases and the same plea for employment. I don’t think it’s an arrogant comment. It’s just merely being human. When you are flooded with letters every working day, you’d surely want to see something that would give your eyes some kind of a feast.

And so I thought, what would make my cover letter stand out? I have no choice but to place more or less the same content as the other applicants. But what would allow me some space to show off some of my character? Personality is the key, my friend would always say. Your letter would show some degree of your character. And what better way to do that than to place some color and style in my cover letter. Hence, I worked on a personal letterhead.

My template does not contain much really. Just the usual – names, contact details, address, a personal URL to my website slash blog. But I did some minor design work on the letter. A semi-transparent box with the details inside it, and some color (that actually matches the company’s colors, of course). I made it a point not to make it appear too excessive, so the Human Resources Department won’t think of me that way. I made it formal and stylish. And then I wrote my cover letter as followed by my resume.

When I finished writing the letter, I printed out a sample so I could have a gauge of my magnum opus. Of course it’s not much. I just wanted to be someone different. I suppose, everybody wants to meet someone who dares to be different, who has enough courage to stand out without being intimidating. I understood that companies invest a lot on employees who show potential, who exemplifies a certain dynamism that would bring the company forward as times go by. I want to be that person for the company where I was applying for. I did not want a job. I wanted a career.

As so it happened. I submitted my application (in the letterhead, of course) to the company. I waited for a response for a week, then two weeks, then three. I was nearly out of desperation, and I was planning of moving on to the next phase of my job hunting, but at that point, the good news arrived. I got a call from the company asking me to report to their office for an interview. The rest, so they say, is history.

I am now very contented of that small out-of-the-box effort I did in order to stand out in the application process. Looking back, the letterhead did some sort of magic for me, and it upped my confidence a bit as I faced the people in the interview. And true enough, it’s a worthy story to tell. Stand out. Be creative. Be the person they want.

Basic Presentation Skills

Presentation is a communication process of transmitting the message from the presenter to the audience. This message can vary in length and complexity. Different presentation aids can be used e.g. flip chart, PowerPoint presentation with the video beamer, whiteboard with erasable pens, laser pointers, etc. Presentation can be done in different circumstances in a more or less formal way.

In fact, everybody is in the position to be a presenter at some point. At school, at the university, during the business presentation or even you can be a professional presenter. Now we come to common problem for most of the people. This problem is “Stage Fright” combined with lack of technical skills of presenting.

Stage fright can be really terrifying to some people. Many people have the fear of the audience, lights of the stage, they are afraid what will be if someone ask them difficult question. This is causing nervousness, sweating, accelerated heartbeat, dizziness or even panic attacks.

On the other hand, presenting skills are technical aspect. Presentation skills are a broad area. It takes some time to develop this skill, for some people more, for the other less time, depends of a talent. Since all of us can be in situation to be presenters, to be in the center of the audience, it is useful to learn basic skills of presenting.

Anybody can prepare at least a decent presentation. Presentation takes some time and effort for preparation. During preparation try to follow basic rules:

· You need to have a minimum of expertise in the area of presentation. This means that you cannot just learn your lines that you will say during the every slide, but you also need to be prepared to answer to potential questions from the audience. Simply, you need to have at least the basic knowledge on the subject presented.

· Make concept for your presentation ( intro, main part, conclusion ). Your presentation needs to have meaningful flow. It should have a theme, the message and learning for your audience. Set up learning goals for your audience and check the results at the end. Longer presentation should have detailed agenda developed.

· Use aids ( power point or flip chart ), but remember that you are still one who is presenting, not the slides. Do not exaggerate with the presentation aids. They should assist you, instead you assist to them.

· Use not more 3-4 lines of text on presentation slides, with maybe 1 photo. If you put too many details, nobody will read it. Average audience is not reading the content of the slide, in case that there are too many details on it. Slides should be clear in content, visible for everybody in your audience, with graphic and color that will not distract audience, or make them difficult to read. If you are not skillful with graphic and colors, use predefined templates.

· Exercise your presentation, so that you get a feeling about it. Check all slides before presentation. Check the video beamer, cables, remote control, room lights and other technicalities before beginning of presentation. Check the colors and readability, since video beamer can present colors in different way than your computer screen. Distorted colors can make reading difficult or impossible.

· Assess the time needed for you presentation and check the timing during your rehearsals. If your presentation is longer, divide it in sections ( e.g. 45 min ) with breaks ( e.g. 10 min ). Time management is critical during the presentation, since audience might start to feel bored if presentation is too long. You can even not finish your presentation, if it takes too long time.

· Try to move around during your presentation. Use your body language. If you just stand still in one place, you will become invisible soon to you audience and their eyes and mind might start to wander around. By moving your self and using your body language, in accordance the dynamic of the subject presented, you are keeping the audience alerted.

· Use examples for your statements. That can be your experience or something you read. If you are using somebody’s examples, quote source of information. You can even say a short story or saying, if you find it suitable for supporting your presentation.

· Use humor in your presentation. This can be planned or spontaneous, but within limits that will not change normal flow of presentation.

· Ask questions to the audience. Ask for volunteers, or pick someone to answer. This will help you to keep the audience alert. They will pay more attention to your presentation, since they know that you might ask them later on. Asking questions will make your presentation more interactive, more interesting to the audience and easier for you, since you will animate people to participate.

· Do not say something like “Sorry about my presentation” or “I am nervous”. I remember some of my friends that used to say something like that during the presentation. I found that to be wrong, since their presentations were actually good and I wouldn’t ever guess that they are nervous or unprepared, if they didn’t say something like that. If you state that you apologize because you are not a good presenter, you are ruining your credibility before you even started. Even if you are a bit nervous there is no reason to say that.

Actually, everybody, even the most experienced presenters, have some “stage fright”. It is normal. But as soon as the presentation starts, you will be released, since you will involve your energy into the presentation.

I am not “born presenter”, since I am an introvert person, but I learned some basic presenting skills and I am using them during occasional business presentation.

Finally, you are born without knowledge of speaking any language, without knowledge of mathematics, without knowledge of driving the bike or a car. 4. They may not leave the jurisdiction of the probation without first notifying their probation officer.

5. They must be present for all scheduled appointments or give 24 hours notice if unable to attend.

6. They must pay any restitution, court costs, fines, or other costs incurred by their judgment.

Statistics show that 86% of all those on probation violate or are otherwise repeat offenders.

Job requirements-

Probation officers should be in good physical and emotional condition. Most agencies require applicants to be at least 21 years old. Those convicted of felonies are not usually eligible for hire in this occupation. Prior employment in such areas as court services, corrections, drug abuse treatment, or counseling may aid towards any requirement for previous work experience.

Education-

Qualifications vary by agency, but a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice is one of the most common requirements. Most applicants are required to complete oral, written, psychological, and physical certification examinations for probation officer licensing.

Training-

Many probation officers work as trainees, on a probationary period of up to a year, before obtaining a permanent position.

Skills-

A probation officer must have the following skills to be successful:

1. Excellent listening abilities since you need to absolve what is being said.

2. The skill to work effectively with others because you need to deal with offenders and their families.

3. The ability to communicate effectively. This is because you will be required to testify in the court of law. The last thing you need is to fumble around when the time comes.

4. The skill needed to write reports. The job requires you to write progress reports on the offenders you are working with. This report will go to courts and will be read by judges and lawyers.

5. You will need to know basic self defense skills. The criminal offenders you supervise can get violent sometimes. You need to be able to protect yourself before law enforcement officers get there.

The Training and Skills You Need to Become a Forensic Accountant

If you ask somebody what their job or profession is, and after they’ve answered, you will probably have a general idea of what they do. Common terms are something we associate with; it helps us to feel knowledgeable about the world around us.

What if I asked you this question, “Do you know what a forensic accountant does?”

Since I associate forensics with science and accounting with numbers, I would have to say they count and number bones. Well, if you thought that too, we’d both be wrong. A forensic accountant does use their knowledge of accounting, but they are also able to use investigation techniques to help solve financial and business problems.

Still sound boring?

Just wait.

What does it take to become a forensic accountant?

You will have to have a bachelor’s degree in accounting. It will also help to be a CPA, Certified Public Accountant. You may want to add CFE, Certified Fraud Examiner to your list of credentials.

You will need to possess a strong attention to detail. Most people have this trait when working in this field, but having an investigative mind is an asset to your profession. It does take an education in accounting but it also takes somebody who has a desire to help solve crimes.

You could be working bankruptcy, money laundering, and even capital crime cases. Anything that has to do with business dealings, analytical research and being allowed to be curious while working is what sets you apart from a regular accountant. You’ll still be using your accounting skills but as more of an investigator.

It would surely be one of those interesting careers that would cause people to ask questions once you’ve told them; and who doesn’t like to tell people about what they do for a living, especially when it is intriguing.

You would be working with legal issues such as money laundering and fraud. Forensic accounts often look over other peoples work too to see if any avenues haven’t been explored, they are always hunting for patterns. They are allowed to be investigative and still work within the scope of their profession. Since a forensic accountant deals with many legal cases, they can also participate as expert witnesses.

If you watch Law & Order: CI you may have seen a character named Leon Martel. He plays a forensic accountant on the show. Television helps to recognize unknown professional and there is no doubt that those who do work in this field know the importance of their contribution. There’s no guarantee that a spin off show will be produced based on this character, but its interesting to see what a forensic accountant does while assisting law enforcement.
